Pupil Premium

Background

Pupil Premium is grant funding for pupils from Reception to Year 11 who are Children in Care (CiC) via a Local Authority for more than 6 months, those eligible for Free School Meals (FSM); and children of armed services personnel. It is also allocated to any pupil who has been in receipt of Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) in the last 6 years (Ever6). The funding is intended to ‘close the gap’ for vulnerable pupils to raise attainment and improve progress.

It is the school’s responsibility to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent and to ensure it is linked to targets based on the child’s educational attainment. It can also be used to support pupils who do not meet any of the PPG criteria but have other identified needs, where it is beneficial to do so. All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received, how it is being used and the impact it has had.

Ethos

The Chalet School’s aim is to ‘Remove obstacles and enable access to learning’ for all pupils, regardless of their background. The targeted use of PPG will support us in achieving this. 

Purpose

In line with the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) 3-tiered approach guidance on Pupil Premium, the school will ensure activities and spend:

• Support the quality of teaching, such as staff professional development
• Provide targeted academic support, such as tutoring
• Tackle non-academic barriers to academic success, such as attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support 

Principles

1. Teaching and learning opportunities will meet the needs of all the pupils
2. Appropriate provision will be made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed
3. In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive Free School Meals will be socially disadvantaged
4. We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered to qualify for Free School Meals or PPG.
5. The Chalet School provides a range of support and individualised interventions which are ‘above the norm’ of other schools in the county (e.g. 1:1 support, parent workshops and so forth). A proportion of Pupil Premium money will be allocated against these costs to ensure continuation of the breadth and high standard of support available to these pupils.
6. In addition to this targeted support, specific equipment, interventions or resources will be purchased for the pupil based on targets established by the school. In the case of Children in Care these would be discussed with those attending the PEP meeting (e.g. Social Worker, parent, foster parent and others attending).
7. Specialised equipment or resources purchased for an individual child may also benefit other children in the group.
8. Use of additional Teaching Assistant support as appropriate.
